Designing sing-a-long stationery for In The Deep Swim School

NatCarroll_InTheDeep_StationeryDesign_All_10col

Based in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, In The Deep teaches babies and young kids how to swim. The school is focused on creating relaxed little swimmers for parents prioritising water safety and outdoor living in their coastal lifestyles. While there's a serious element to what In The Deep does, the heart of the brand lies within it's sense of child-like play, creativity and always-innovating approach.

With a background in music, the director of the school, Sasha Hanic, penned a song about being in the water. When Sasha approached me to create stationery as part of a larger re-brand, I felt it was important in this context to specifically highlight two of the brand's attributes; the play and joy of being in the water, and the high-quality, sophisticated approach to programming.

I approached the design of the stationery set utilising the relaxed feel and joy of the song Sasha wrote, typeset in the child-like hand lettering typeface I made, and paired this with generous white space and the muted blues of the colour palette to add a more serious tone. We decided on further accentuating the water and playful themes of the brand with a die-cut that resembled the watery waves – a repeating brand element – throughout the stationery set.

Hallo, nice to sea you here!

I'm Nat,  I’m an Australian artist. I create feel-good art, illustration and lettering. Informed by a background in visual communication and art direction, I work with brands, agencies, publishers and people to communicate stories of connection, empowerment and awe. My practice is a sparkly, colourful ode to the wonder and joy I stumble upon in my universe using hand-drawn and digital techniques. A dream-like language of place, nature, words and people are playfully explored from my studio next to the ocean, amongst the trees on the south-east coast of Australia, on Djiringanj Country. Swimming, reading, plant-hoarding, travelling and wandering with my doggo in the forest keep me feeling human.
