Relaxed and ready to unfurl the sails for Indigo Pictures.

Hiromi Matsuoka is a producer whose work takes her across the world with productions in the film, TV and advertising industries. As a sea-side living, ocean-loving, adventuring soul with Japanese heritage, it seemed only fitting she chose the name 'Indigo Pictures' to represent her small business. Hiromi commissioned me to create an identity and after spending some time digging together, we landed on what makes her unique – as a line-producer, she is someone who is always in a state of relaxed-readiness.

With the words calm, prepared and indigo on my mind, I kept getting drawn to a sailboat motif and a discussion we had about the simplicity achieved in Japanese calligraphy. I began exploring simple forms that could represent a sailboat that a brush might follow. What drew me in to the sailboat is that it's graceful and calm in it's smooth sailing – it’s a feeling of relaxed-readiness. The sails are ready to unfurl and navigate through the adversity of what may come, with ease and gentle, confident guidance.

I selected the typeface, Apercu, which I felt integrated with the icon to make the logo feel holistic. I think the letter shapes compliment the sailboat – the thickness of the letters are just right to see the logo as a whole, rather than an icon and type, and the slight rigid feel in the typeface lends a more confident, sophisticated tone.

I then further explored the idea of relaxed-readiness, simplicity and smooth-sailing, creating some icons, stationery and a simple website that are all in the deep hues of indigo and the ocean.

“I believe Nat has a rare combination of left brain analytical, organisational skills and right brain free-flowing creativity; it was a thoroughly enjoyable, collaborative and educational process working with her – I think the results speak for themselves.” — Hiromi Matsuoka, Indigo Pictures

Oh hallo there!

I'm Nat Carroll, an art director, graphic designer, illustrator and strategist. Most days you'll find me tucked away in my studio down on the south coast, next to the ocean and amongst the trees. I'm a wonderer, I'm a wanderer. An escape-artist, and adventure-seeker. I'm a tragic plant-lady, vinyl, book and dog-rescuer. A foodie, music and arts lover. I'm mesmerised by all the patterns, shapes, lines and colours.
